EOB & OSB Facebook functionality

Eastern Orthodox Bible (v1.1.2) and Orthodox Study Bible (v1.0.1) have been updated to fix/improve the Facebook sharing functionality.

The native Facebook app had been truncating longer verse shares. They can now be viewed in their entirety.

1-chapter books

You may have noticed that the VerseWise Bible 4.3 and EOB 1.1 updates are now in the store.

Unfortunately it appears that 1-chapter books like Jude are not displaying correctly! I'll look into this and submit a fix soon.

Update 10/27:

One workaround is to rotate the device to landscape. The text will then appear correctly! You can then rotate back to portrait if you prefer.

Still trying to figure out why this is happening in the first place...

Update 11/2:

Fix for VerseWise Bible (4.3.1) is now available in App Store! EOB shouldn't be too far behind.

Update 11/5:

Fix for EOB (1.1.1) now in App Store!

VW iOS 6 update

If you've updated to iOS 6 on iPhone, and you like using landscape orientation, perhaps you've noticed that's broken. I am fixing that for a new update. As you may have guessed from the previous post, this will also accomodate the iPhone 5's larger screen.

Unfortunately this means making iOS 5 and 6 required. Apologies to those still on iOS 4, but there is no alternative. I prefer to support older versions of the OS but there is no way to completely support both iOS 4 and iOS 6 at the same time.

Fortunately, most iPhones and iPod touches can run iOS 5, so if you haven't already, I encourage you to upgrade!

Update 10/18:

This update has been submitted to the store. It should be available within a week or two.

EOB search

The search functionality in EOB is broken! I know what the issue is and will get a fix out as soon as possible.

Update 8/14

Submitted a fix for this last night. Will let you know when it's in the App Store!

Update 8/20

Eastern Orthodox Bible

Coming soon: the Eastern Orthodox Bible for the iPhone & iPod touch!

The Eastern/Greek Orthodox Bible (EOB) is a scholarly translation and edition of the Holy Scriptures based on the Patriarchal Greek Orthodox with extensive introductory material.
This New Testament text is based on the official ecclesiastical text published in 1904 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (documenting all significant variants to the Critical Text, Majority Text and Textus Receptus). It also provides extensive footnotes.
The main purpose of the EOB is to provide an accurate and easy-to-read English text of the Holy Scriptures that is suitable for use by Orthodox Christian communities and individuals, while providing an outstanding text for scholars.
Read more about the text at the EOB web site.

The EOB app is powered by VerseWise Bible and shares the same easy navigation, reading history, search, highlighting, bookmarking and Scripture sharing.

The initial release includes the New Testament. Psalms and the Old Testament will be added as the text becomes available.

More news here as it is available!

Privacy Policy

Nothing really exciting, but I've written up a privacy policy that details the information our apps might send out while you're using them. The iTunes App Store has never required one but the Facebook App Center does. Go figure!

Let me know if you have any concerns or questions!

iPhone 4.2 crashes

The crash I mentioned previously turns out to be more serious than I thought. VerseWise Bible on iPhone 4.2 can crash quite consistently if your device does not have an internet connection.

I have submitted a fix to Apple and requested an expedited review. I will keep you updated.

Thank you again to everyone sending in the crash reports! This would not have come to my attention without you.

iPhone 4.2 bugs

We've discovered a couple issues with the iPhone 4.2 release and I hope to get a 4.2.1 update into the store soon!
  • If you select and then de-select a highlighted verse, the verse appears to lose its highlight. (Thank you to Kevin R. for reporting this.) The highlight isn't actually gone, you'll see it when you return to the same chapter.
  • Next & Last Read functionality is not working on some plans that were in progress. (Thank you to Paul R. for reporting this.) I believe this is limited to:
    • RSV-CE "Bible in 1 year (mixed)"
    • RSV (deuterocanon) "Bible in 1 year (mixed)"
    • KJV (deuterocanon) "Bible in 1 year (mixed)"
  • Getting a number of crash reports from people running the iPhone app on iPad. (Did you know VerseWise Bible is now available on iPad?) Bah, I thought I had fixed this! If you've experienced this and can tell me where you were in the app when it happened, please email me! See update.
Thank you to those sending in bug and crash reports I appreciate it!

  • Many new Reading Plans, improved functionality (including easy Next Reading)
  • Fixed Esther readings in existing Reading Plans
I will let you know when it's in the store!

Esther and reading plans

Some of you may remember my comments about the deuterocanonical version of Esther and its chapter numbering. Turns out some of the reading plans were a little confused about this! Douay-Rheims' 1-year plan had chapters "A, 1-2" for its Day 220 Old Testament reading. Thing is, Douay is different than the other deuterocanonical versions I deal with (KJV, RSV) in that it just numbers the chapters 1-16.

Also noticed that the new chronological 1-year plans I created for KJV and RSV didn't quite work with Esther. Fixing this (and taking a quick look at how the plans handle Daniel...) before releasing the iPad apps to store.

Funny enough, I have a new text I'll be working on soon that numbers Esther yet another way, with chapters A, B, C instead of KJV/RSV's 11, 12, 13. Fun fun fun!

iPad retina + improved poetry formatting

One of these days I will release RSV-CE iPad 1.0.2, really I will! (And don't remind me I haven't even released the other translations' iPad versions yet...) Soon! But I keep finding more things to do.

The latest I've done is updated the graphics to look nice on the iPad 3. I thought that would be the last thing I did before release, but then I noticed some of the headnotes didn't look right in the Wisdom of Solomon. And then I was reminded how I really didn't like how the poetry formatting looked. So I've fixed that. And will fix the headnotes. And then I'll try to send it to the App Store.

Here are some before & afters showing the improved poetry formatting. Mainly it's moving the verse number over so that it's easier to see and the text remains aligned.

Genesis after:

A big difference in books that are mostly poetry, like Wisdom and Psalms.

iPad 1.0.2 & Reading Plans

Coming soon! Thank you to everyone who have been sending in crash reports. I have a couple more crash fixes, including some in Bookmarks I thought I had addressed in 1.0.1.

I also plan on finally doing the RSV, KJV and DR iPad releases! Apologies for those who have been waiting for these, but the good news is that you should have fewer crashes to deal with than the RSV-CE folk. ;)

Also included are several improvements to Reading Plans, including "Next" functionality that lets you easily jump to the next reading.

I have also added more plans including:
  • Pentateuch
  • Psalms
  • Proverbs
  • Gospels
  • Epistles

iPad 1.0.1 coming soon

This will be an update to RSV-CE. It will be an initial iPad release for RSV, KJV and Douay Rheims.

Four crashes fixed:
  • Swipe chapter or reading text after "back" button has been hit in left pane
  • Swipe to delete a bookmark's tag
  • Settings (infrequent)
  • History (infrequent)
Thank you to those sending in the crash reports!

One enhancement:
  • Formatted text for RSV

Plus a bunch of minor tweaks and enhancements that didn't make it into 1.0!

UPDATE #1:

Added two more crashes that were fixed.

UPDATE #2:

Now in the store! Working on getting other iPad versions submitted soon!
