iOS 11 and VerseWise Bible for iPad

A reminder that VerseWise Bible is now a "universal" app! A convenience to new users who don't want to buy both iPhone and iPad versions of the app but a bit of an inconvenience to some current users. My apologies!

The iPad-only version of the app has been discontinued and does not run on iOS 11 (due to a technical issue, not by my design).

The iPhone-only version of the app was updated to run on both iPhone and iPad. If you did not previously own the iPhone (now universal) version, you will need to purchase and download it. It from the App Store. You can find links here. (The links no longer work on desktop version of iTunes, tap on them from iPhone or iPad.)

If you were logged into iCloud on your iPad, you should be able to restore your bookmarks & highlights by going to the Settings screen (by tapping the "gear" button), selecting "iCloud Backups" and then selecting the most recent backup (listed first).

Again, apologies for the inconvenience! Please contact me if you have any questions.

iOS 7/8 update

Apologies for the lack of recent updates, but I'm still here! Distracted, but here.

An iOS 7/8 update is on the way. Just added support for iPhone 6 and 6+. It doesn't look like many of you have upgraded to the new models yet, but for those that have, a non-scaled app is on the way!

iPhone 5

iPhone 6

iPhone 6+

For those waiting for iPad news, I'm hoping to have more clarity have this month's Apple event. Rumor has it that there might be some interesting news regarding the sizing of apps on the screen. More to come.

VerseWise Bible update

Just wanted to let you know that a VerseWise Bible update is in the works! Should have the iPhone version submitted to the App Store within a day or two. iPad will take longer, but it's coming!

The bigger items in the update will be a improvement to Facebook sharing and additional books for those reading the deuterocanonical text in KJV (2 Esdras) and RSV (2 Esdras and 4 Maccabees). Some (perhaps) less noticeable items are improved crash reporting, less crashing (hopefully!) and some polish.

If you've been following the Orthodox Study Bible updates, know that they're uncovering some issues you don't have to! Frequent updates aren't always an advantage. :)

Update 3/5

Yes, this update was delayed! (Story of my life.) I am readying an iPhone update in the next day or so. Unfortunately, I do not know exactly when the next iPad update is coming. Stay tuned!

VWB 4.4 submitted.

iPad 1.0.2 submitted to App Store

I submitted VerseWise Bible for the iPad 1.0.2 a couple days ago.

This will be the first release for Revised Standard Version, King James Version and Douay-Rheims.

It will be an update for Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition.

Updated since RSV-CE 1.0.1:
  • Updated assets for latest iPad (Retina display)
  • Improved text formatting, especially poetry (Psalms, etc.)
  • Many new Reading Plans, improved functionality (including easy Next Reading)
  • Fixed Esther readings in existing Reading Plans
I will let you know when it's in the store!

iPad retina + improved poetry formatting

One of these days I will release RSV-CE iPad 1.0.2, really I will! (And don't remind me I haven't even released the other translations' iPad versions yet...) Soon! But I keep finding more things to do.

The latest I've done is updated the graphics to look nice on the iPad 3. I thought that would be the last thing I did before release, but then I noticed some of the headnotes didn't look right in the Wisdom of Solomon. And then I was reminded how I really didn't like how the poetry formatting looked. So I've fixed that. And will fix the headnotes. And then I'll try to send it to the App Store.

Here are some before & afters showing the improved poetry formatting. Mainly it's moving the verse number over so that it's easier to see and the text remains aligned.

Genesis after:

Wisdom before:

Wisdom after:

A big difference in books that are mostly poetry, like Wisdom and Psalms.

iPad 1.0.2 & Reading Plans

Coming soon! Thank you to everyone who have been sending in crash reports. I have a couple more crash fixes, including some in Bookmarks I thought I had addressed in 1.0.1.

I also plan on finally doing the RSV, KJV and DR iPad releases! Apologies for those who have been waiting for these, but the good news is that you should have fewer crashes to deal with than the RSV-CE folk. ;)

Also included are several improvements to Reading Plans, including "Next" functionality that lets you easily jump to the next reading.

I have also added more plans including:
  • Pentateuch
  • Psalms
  • Proverbs
  • Gospels
  • Epistles

iPad 1.0.1 coming soon

This will be an update to RSV-CE. It will be an initial iPad release for RSV, KJV and Douay Rheims.

Four crashes fixed:
  • Swipe chapter or reading text after "back" button has been hit in left pane
  • Swipe to delete a bookmark's tag
  • Settings (infrequent)
  • History (infrequent)
Thank you to those sending in the crash reports!

One enhancement:
  • Formatted text for RSV

Plus a bunch of minor tweaks and enhancements that didn't make it into 1.0!

UPDATE #1:

Added two more crashes that were fixed.

UPDATE #2:

Now in the store! Working on getting other iPad versions submitted soon!

VerseWise Bible RSV-CE for iPad now available

VerseWise Bible RSV-CE for iPad is now in the App Store! Download it, tell your friends and let me know what you think! I hope you like it.

RSV, KJV, DR and RV will follow in the upcoming weeks.

I did find some bugs since submitting it:
  • Deleting a bookmark does not always dismiss the popover
  • Bookmarks in Plans sometimes cause a delayed redraw of the screen
For both of these problems an extra tap fixes things, but they're annoying nonetheless and I'll get a fix out soon. In the meantime, if you find anything else, please let me know in the comments or in email.

I also plan to add formatting now that we have all of that iPad real estate. This will bring the text layout more in line with the published page. My top priority is the RSV and RSV-CE.

And, yes, we have an iPhone/iPod update waiting in the wings. As soon as all the iPad editions are out the door I'll work on this.

VerseWise Bible RSV-CE S submitted

The first iPad version of VerseWise Bible has been submitted to the App Store! Apple's Christmas break is only a week away, but that might be enough time to get it approved before they're off. They've been speedy in past holiday seasons.

Since this is a 1.0, I'm only releasing the RSV-CE version for now. Once I feel comfortable that there aren't any big issues (nothing like having to fix a bug and then re-submit 5 or 6 apps at the same time), I'll roll out other versions.

In the development of the iPad version, I've also been updating the iPhone/iPod code base. Nothing real fancy as far as features go, but a lot of under-the-covers stuff like a crash reporter that will allow you to send crash reports with a single tap. I hope to use this to improve the quality of VerseWise, so please tap "Send" when asked! (Ideally you'll never even see a crash, of course.)

That said, I don't want to send an iPhone/iPod update with nothing "new", so I'll see what I can do.

Thank you for your support and I hope you all have a blessed Christmas season.

iPad sharing & bookmarks

Time for another iPad update!

Got Facebook Sharing working on the iPad the other day.

That, and Bookmarks, were the final bits of functionality I needed to implement. (I'm saving new features for after I get initial iPad app out.)

Now comes a bit of "tuning" to make everything work better and more intuitively. Oh, and better tab bar buttons.

Crashes while running on iPad

A couple users have noticed crashes when running VerseWise (which is currently an iPhone/iPod app) on an iPad. I unfortunately introduced this problem while adding code for the upcoming iPad release.

The problem occurs when VerseWise tries to rotate. One quick fix is to go into Settings and turn Autorotate "off". Or you can just try to be careful and not rotate your iPad while running the app. :)

Of course I will release a fix for this in the next update. I hope to also include some new reading plans.

iPad search & history

With the usual apologies for the time this is taking. :)

(See screenshots below.)

I did recently get a question about whether the iPad version of VerseWise will be bundled with the iPhone/iPod version as a "Universal app" (as opposed to being listed in the App Store separately). Here is my response.

As an update, it would be real nice if I could just release the iPad version for iOS 5, which is due to be released in September (which is good timing for me at the rate I'm going). The "popovers" you see in the screenshots below just don't always behave right in iOS 4. I can work around these misbehaviors for the most part, but they still don't act exactly right.

That could mean two things:
  • Release of iPad app in September?
  • Won't be bundled as a Universal app, but will need to be purchased separately.

iPad actions

Had a little spare time to work on the iPad this week. Since the last update:
  • I've added the "Additional" tab on the left (below Bible and Reading Plans) for things like a Preface or other additional materials.
  • I've added the Action button.

Most of the actions are working as-is, but there are a couple that need to be tweaked for iPad.

So ... it's coming along! I apologize for those who were hoping for a speedy iPad release (I certainly was!) but it is what it is. I very much want to get this in the store and will keep you updated.
